I hope you all are known something about WeChat is and how it works. But many of the users wondering it’s a legitimate messaging and communication service, and safe while using it. In this article, we explain everything there is to know about WeChat and its security.

WeChat Pay

WeChat’s major success is because of this platform’s mobile payment service called WeChat Pay. It helps every aspect of a user’s life from shopping to booking taxis, hospital appointments and ordering food through this application.

In China, 84% of people are willing to replace cash with mobile payment. In 2016, 38 trillion Yuan (A$7.5 trillion) was exchanged via mobile payment which is 50 times larger than the United States, the world’s second-biggest market. Till date, WeChat has successfully launched its payment service “WeChat Pay” in 15 countries.

WeChat Pay targets Australia which is a popular destination for Chinese students and tourists. In Australia there are more than 10,000 shops and restaurants are using the WeChat Pay system. In 2016, Chinese tourists spent A$9.2 billion in Australia, and it is expected to grow A$13 billion by the end of 2020.

Security Flaws in Chinese Apps

Tech gadgets imported from China, such as smartphones, watches and other goods are regularly having security flaws and even spying government by that tool. The Indian government blacklisted WeChat and some other 41 apps on last December and categorizing them as spyware.

According to WeChat, user data is not monitored or saved by the company server, as long as there is no requirement from the Chinese authorities. However, Australian users WeChat account is always censored – even if you connect your WeChat to an Australian number.

If you register the WeChat account outside China, you will be considered as “overseas account” and you’re not censored that apply to Chinese users the same strict standards. A recent survey from the Citizen Lab suggests that messages containing censored keywords will still be banned if they are sent to a Chinese account.

The most common method of censorship on WeChat is keyword blocking, which means messages containing sensitive spam words, such as “Tiananmen June 4” and “free Tibet”, won’t be received to another end user.

Is WeChat Safe and Secure for Messaging?

WeChat is as safe as other messaging and communication apps because it requires a verified mobile phone number, and a strong password to register as a user. So as long as the user continually changing their password, enable 2-factor authentication on their mobile device, no one can access their messages or personal profile without their knowledge.

For safety concerns change your privacy settings as per your requirements. Here are the top 5 safety tips when using WeChat.

1. Create a secure and lengthy password for your WeChat account.

2. Always sign out your account when you’re finished.

3. Change your privacy settings immediately.

4. Analyze and verify their profile before you add any unknown users.

5. Don’t use the WeChat “Shake” function.

This FAQ listed on WeChat’s official customer website:

One of WeChat’s official customer said that WeChat securely encrypts your sent and received messages between the servers. We do not permanently store the content of any messages on our servers whether they are video, audio or text. WeChat deletes the content of the message on our servers and therefore third parties including WeChat itself are unable to view the content of your message.

Currently, WeChat is the only app in its category that is accredited by the privacy organization TRUSTe. It’s also certified by the austerest international server security compliance standard ISO 270001–2013. So it would be quite difficult for hackers to penetrate WeChat’s servers and view any of the users’ private information.

For example, forms that ask age, marital status are more likely to be skipped. If possible, without typing pre-fill as much information as you have available. Doing this method increases the chances of someone completing the form.

Facebook Small Business Grant Program

The COVID-19 pandemic is going to get worse and troubling us in many ways. The virus still spreading into new regions at a rapid pace, which will have a major impact on many sectors and businesses. So Facebook Inc has launched a resource hub and a grant to help small-business owners manage during the coronavirus outbreak.

In a Facebook post on March 17, the company’s COO, Sheryl Sandberg, says that the company will be launching a massive grant program to help small businesses who all are affected by Covid-19. Specifically, Facebook will provide $100 million in “cash and ad credits” to more than 30,000 businesses in the 30 countries where Facebook operates.

Who is Eligible for Funding

Facebook has also created a new page where SMB owners can sign up to receive more information about when the program starts, eligibility criteria, and application acceptance details. While the site doesn’t provide an exact date when that happens and they are clear that this is more than just providing free ads on its platform. The company gives some examples of how small businesses will use these grants, like office rent, operational costs, or paying employee wages.

Those small businesses are surely Facebook’s customers so if they overcome this business financial crisis, obviously, the world’s second-largest advertising platform has a huge incentive they can earn and again, so do we all.

In order to provide further assistance, Facebook has:

  • Launched a new Business Resource Hub, which helps to provide support for businesses to connect them to relevant tools and advice who all are affected by the coronavirus outbreak
  • Help to work on a new virtual training program to support businesses operating in altered conditions because of the COVID-19 lockdowns.
  • Create a new strategy on how it can host dedicated, virtual training sessions with businesses all over the world
  • Begun work on a new set of Facebook Blueprint materials, with a particular focus on remote work and managing remote teams.

Since then, we’ve seen many apps like Snapchat and TikTok to fill Vine’s place. These two apps allow users to express their creativity through short mobile videos and also have lots of new filters and features compare to other social media platforms, like Facebook and Twitter.

Snapchat vs TikTok Comparison

At this moment, both apps continue to grow on the market. Snapchat has around 210 million daily active users globally while TikTok recently surpassed 800 million monthly active users.

To know the strength of these two apps, Hubspot made a polled to the U.S youngs of over 350 people to find out which app they regularly log into Snapchat, TikTok, or neither. At the end of the poll result, both apps have a close number of votes.

What is Snapchat: Snapchat, which is launched in 2011 that allows users to exchange pictures, videos, and text which is called snaps. Unlike most other social apps, Snapchat content expires immediately (10 seconds) or after 24 hours. This photo-sharing platform encourages its users creating content that is more joyous and uncensored than other more public-facing social media platforms.

How it’s used: Snapchat offers many ways for users to keep up with friends, popular trends and relevant news, Bitmoji Tv and more. Snapchat has been investing so much in AI and AR capabilities features (or ‘Lenses’) to give brands and users for more creative abilities like try-on effects, object scanning, and 3D environment interactions.

Advertising. Snapchat offers a wide range of advertising options through its self-serve ad platform, from standard Snap Ad units that appear between stories to ads that use branded filters and AR lenses. It also has an e-commerce component with shopping ads, personalized audience targeting ads with a native checkout feature.

What is TikTok: TikTok is a fastest growing video-sharing app that launched in just 2017 by Chinese tech company ByteDance. It is similar to Vine app in that manner it allows users to create 10 to 60-second looping videos and post on their profiles. TikTok was the most downloaded app in the U.S in the year 2018 and it’s reached 1.5 billion downloads globally at the end of 2019.

How it’s used: TikTok users create and post short, looping videos from its massive library of music and sounds. TikTok isn’t the place for serious life updates or connecting with friends. Most TikTok videos are like a dance choreographed, lip-syncing, hashtag challenges and reaction videos.

  • In-feed native video ads
  • Brand takeovers (a full-screen ad that appears when a user first opens the app)
  • Hashtag challenges

Best Platform for Brand Marketing

Both TikTok ads and Snapchat ads offer a great opportunity for brands to connect with audiences especislly young people. Specifically, TikTok ad marketing strategy can be effective for driving awareness with user-generated content (UGC) in the form of brand challenges, reactions, or filters. Snapchat platform is better for sharing fleeting life moments and surfacing relevant content that the user might care about – like original series or Stories.
