Meta Rolls Out Advanced AI Chatbot to All of its Apps

Meta AI Chatbot

When OpenAI’s ChatGPT first came out in November 2022, a lot of people were amazed by what it could do. It could talk like a human and help with all sorts of things like writing poems, making music, solving math problems, and even assisting with schoolwork. Because of its success, other big tech companies started making their own chatbots. But Meta, one of the biggest companies, didn’t have one until they revealed Meta AI at the Meta Connect 2023 event.

With a lot of money invested in AI and plenty of resources, Meta is stepping up its game to compete with OpenAI and others in the generative AI field. Starting from April 18, 2024, people using Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger can use Meta’s advanced AI assistant directly from the search bar in each app.

As shown in an example shared by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, starting now, whenever you search within any of Meta’s primary apps (except Threads for now), you’ll be able to access Meta’s generative AI chat engine. This allows you to ask questions and engage in conversations directly within the app.

So, basically, Meta is integrating ChatGPT into its apps, allowing you to ask questions to Meta’s advanced AI engine directly in your conversations. In this example, within Instagram chat, you can use the new chat option to search the web for relevant information, giving more context to your discussions.

This could be helpful, although it wasn’t successful when Meta first introduced it in 2017 on the Messenger application. Meta previously attempted to provide an AI-based assistant in conversations with its M bot, which offered similar features. However, it didn’t gain much attention, so Meta shut down the M Bot in 2018 due to low usage. Despite Meta’s efforts to learn from the M experiment, it never became a widely used or valuable addition to the platform.

As Explained by Meta

“Built with Meta Llama 3, Meta AI is one of the world’s leading AI assistants, already on your phone, in your pocket for free. And it’s starting to go global with more features. You can use Meta AI on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger to get things done, learn, create and connect with the things that matter to you.”

They’re launching Meta AI in English in over a dozen countries outside of the US. Now, people in Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe can use Meta AI. And this is just the beginning!

Llama 3 is a prime illustration of the rapid scaling of AI models. Compared to the largest version of Llama 2 released last year, which had 70 billion parameters, the upcoming large version of Llama 3 will boast over 400 billion parameters, according to Zuckerberg. While Llama 2 was trained on 2 trillion tokens, representing the words or fundamental units of meaning in a model, the large version of Llama 3 will incorporate over 15 trillion tokens. (OpenAI has not publicly confirmed the number of parameters or tokens in GPT-4 yet.)

How does Meta AI work?

Meta AI will also be accessible when you’re working on your computer, as we’re launching the meta.ai website today. Whether you’re stuck on a math problem or need assistance crafting a professional work email, Meta AI is here to help! Plus, you can log in to save your conversations with Meta AI for future reference.

Planning a night out with friends? Let Meta AI suggest a restaurant with sunset views and vegan options. Organizing a weekend getaway? Get Meta AI to find concerts for Saturday night. Cramming for a test? Ask Meta AI to explain how hereditary traits work. Moving into your first apartment? Ask Meta AI to envision the aesthetic you’re aiming for, and it will generate inspirational photos for your furniture shopping.

Seamless Search Integration in the Meta Apps

Meta AI seamlessly integrates into the apps you already use and love, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. You can access real-time information from the web without needing to switch between apps. For example, imagine you’re planning a ski trip in your Messenger group chat. By using search within Messenger, you can ask Meta AI to find flights from New York to Colorado and identify the least crowded weekends to visit—all without leaving the Messenger app.

Meta AI in Feed

You can also use Meta AI while scrolling through your Facebook Feed. If you come across a post that catches your eye, you can ask Meta AI for more information directly from the post. For example, if you see a photo of the northern lights in Iceland, you can ask Meta AI about the best time of year to see the aurora borealis.

Ignite your creativity with Meta AI’s Imagine feature!

Meta is speeding up image generation, allowing users to create images from text in real time using Meta AI’s Imagine feature. This beta version is now rolling out on WhatsApp and the Meta AI web experience in the US.

As users start typing, an image will appear—and it will evolve with every few letters typed, allowing them to witness as Meta AI brings their ideas to life.

The images generated are sharper and of higher quality, with improved text inclusion. Whether it’s album artwork, wedding signage, birthday decorations, or outfit inspiration, Meta AI can now generate images that reflect users’ visions faster and better than ever before. It even offers helpful prompts with ideas to modify the image, enabling users to keep refining the initial concept.

But there’s more! If users come across an image they adore, they can ask Meta AI to animate it, try out different styles, or even turn it into a GIF to share with friends.

With their most potent large language model at the core, Meta AI has reached new heights. They’re thrilled to introduce their next-generation assistant to a wider audience and are eager to witness how it enriches people’s lives. While these advancements are tailored to Meta AI within Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and on the web, Meta AI is also accessible in the US through Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses—and it’s soon arriving on Meta Quest. Stay tuned for more updates in the weeks ahead!
