Elon Musk’s X launches Beta Version of X TV App

X TV app in LG Store

X TV App

Tech billionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk announced the beta version of the X TV app in September 4th. Earlier this year, X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, said X was becoming a platform focused on video. So this X’s Connected TV app roll out is the first step of that.

The X’s connected TV app lets users browse videos uploaded to X and watch live streams. To use the app, you need to sign in to your X account. Before this app, the only way to watch X videos on TV was by casting them from a device like an iPhone or Android smartphone.

The X app for TV is now available to the public. You can install it on smart TVs through Google Play, Amazon’s app store, and LG’s app store. However, the app is yet to be available for Apple TV or the App Store for tvOS.

X TV App Features

The new X TV app allows users to watch videos from X on their smart TVs. According to a post on X’s official engineering blog, this, along with the upcoming Video Tab, is a big step toward making X a video-focused platform and opening up new possibilities for creators, advertisers, and partners.

The X TV app on the Google Play Store allows subscribers to watch a variety of videos, including news, sports, movies, music videos, and weather updates on their smart TVs.

Currently, the app offers three main features:

  1. Cloud Storage: Users can save up to 72 hours of shows in the cloud to watch later.
  2. Startover TV: Users can start watching a video from the beginning, even if they join it partway through.
  3. DVR Recordings: Users can store up to 100 hours of DVR recordings for free.

Conclusion

The main reason for this roll-out is to compete with the number one video streaming platform YouTube. He asked MrBeast, YouTube’s most subscribed channel, to post full videos on X, formerly Twitter.

X wants to become a video-focused app, and the updated Connected TV platform supports this goal. While it might not be a game-changer right now, adding more exclusive content and enhancing the CTV experience could lay the groundwork for future growth in video engagement.
